Google Learn Privacy: Free Privacy by Design Course

Make more deliberate decisions about data collection, third-party integrations and encryption with Google’s free web.dev privacy course.

Learn Privacy by Google, with an illustrated layered shield, padlock and browser permission controls.

A privacy decision can begin with something as ordinary as a form field, an embedded widget or a request to another server. Learn Privacy, Google’s free course on web.dev, helps developers examine those choices before they become a habit. Its focus is practical: understand what a website collects, who can access it and how to reduce unnecessary exposure.

The course suits developers who already understand HTML, JavaScript and HTTP requests. It connects technical decisions with the experience of the person using your website, giving you a clearer way to discuss data collection, third-party integrations and privacy safeguards with your team.

What you’ll learn

  • Question unnecessary collection: connect each piece of requested information with a specific purpose.
  • Plan data retention: consider when information should be removed and how users can control it.
  • Evaluate third-party integrations: understand the privacy implications of adding externally supplied features.
  • Recognise fingerprinting: see how combinations of device and browser characteristics can distinguish users.
  • Understand encryption’s role: distinguish protecting information in transit, in storage and between endpoints.
  • Make privacy an ongoing practice: document decisions and revisit them as your website changes.

Skills you’ll gain

  • Privacy by design
  • Data minimisation
  • Retention planning
  • Third-party assessment
  • Fingerprinting awareness
  • Encryption concepts

Start with the information your website really needs

The data module gives you a useful place to begin: what decision or feature requires each piece of information? That question can reveal a difference between information you need now and information collected because it might be useful someday.

You also explore less detailed collection, deletion and clear explanations near the point where information is requested. These are choices you can discuss while designing a feature, rather than waiting until the database already contains more personal information than the feature needs.

The third-party material broadens that view. A website’s privacy behaviour is affected by the services it embeds as well as the code its own team writes. Learning to ask what an integration can observe makes supplier choices part of the technical conversation.

Understand the safeguards without mistaking them for guarantees

Fingerprinting introduces a different kind of identification: details that seem unimportant on their own can become distinctive when combined. The course helps you recognise that issue and consider browser differences when assessing a feature.

Encryption addresses another question: who can read information as it moves or is stored? The relevant lessons explain several forms of protection. They give you concepts for evaluating an implementation; completing the reading does not prove that a live system is secure or compliant.

Try a focused privacy review

For an optional personal exercise, sketch a fictional event-registration form. List each field, its purpose, who would receive the information and when it would be deleted. Then challenge one field: could the form work without it, or with a less detailed answer?

Keep this exercise local and use fictional data. A browser and ordinary text editor are enough for the learning and planning route described here. You do not need to purchase hosting, an analytics product or an external payment service. Configuring production encryption and server controls is a separate implementation task, not something this description claims you can complete from a local file.

Free access and the course’s boundaries

The lessons are publicly readable without payment, a card, a trial or a subscription. Study them in sequence, then revisit the guidance when a new feature changes your data flows. No fixed total study duration is verified.

The completion page offers a Learn Privacy badge after you confirm finishing the course; collecting it uses a free standard developer profile. This is not a promised formal certificate or academic credit. The course explicitly provides technical guidance rather than legal advice, so it should not be treated as a compliance checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is Learn Privacy suitable for a complete coding beginner?

The stated prerequisites include intermediate HTML, JavaScript and HTTP knowledge. Build those foundations first if requests, headers and browser code are unfamiliar.

Do I need to buy a privacy or security tool?

No. The public lessons and independent local review exercise described here do not require a paid tool or hosted service. Production implementation has its own technical requirements.

Will finishing the course certify legal compliance?

No. The course is technical learning, not legal advice or a certification of your website. The optional profile badge confirms the course-completion declaration.
