Google Learn JavaScript: Free JavaScript Fundamentals Course

Understand JavaScript values, functions, objects and classes with Google’s free web.dev course and independent browser practice.

Learn JavaScript cover with an interactive browser panel, code braces and a coral cursor connected to content cards.

A piece of JavaScript is easier to change when you understand why it behaves the way it does. Learn JavaScript, Google’s public course on web.dev, develops that understanding from values and variables through functions, objects and classes. It gives you a language foundation you can return to when a copied snippet stops working or a framework hides an important detail.

The course is a sequence of written lessons rather than a live class. You can move through the basics in order, pause to experiment, and revisit a particular language feature later. Its focus is JavaScript itself: a useful starting point before choosing libraries or building more elaborate web applications.

What you’ll learn

  • Recognise different kinds of values: work through numbers, text, Boolean values and the other primitive data types.
  • Store and compare information: understand variables, comparison operators and the decisions made by control flow.
  • Organise repeatable behaviour: learn how functions receive information, return results and work within an execution context.
  • Represent structured data: explore objects, property access and the relationship between objects and prototypes.
  • Choose collections: examine arrays, maps and sets for different ways of grouping information.
  • Understand class syntax: investigate methods, fields, inheritance and static initialization.

Understand the value before changing the code

Unexpected behaviour often begins with a mistaken assumption about data. Text that looks like a number is still text; a missing value needs different handling from a value that is deliberately empty. The early lessons help you notice these distinctions before they spread through a larger script.

Functions then give those individual operations a clearer home. Instead of repeating several steps wherever you need a result, you can give the operation a name and examine what it accepts and returns. The sections on objects and collections extend the same thinking to groups of related information.

Classes appear later in the sequence. You can study them after the earlier object material rather than treating class syntax as a shortcut around it. This order makes the course useful both as an introduction and as a reference when unfamiliar code uses a feature you have not practised yet.

Turn each lesson into a small experiment

Try one concept at a time in your browser’s developer console. Predict the result before you run the code, then change one value and explain what changed. A plain-text editor and a small local HTML file also let you keep experiments without purchasing hosting or installing a framework.

For an optional personal exercise, describe a short reading list as an array of objects. Give each item a title and a Boolean value showing whether you have finished it. Write a function that returns the titles you still want to read. Start with a few items so you can check the result yourself.

This exercise is independent practice, not a graded assignment supplied by Google. It is valuable because you can connect several language concepts while keeping the expected result visible. Save a working version before adding another feature, and keep a note of any behaviour you cannot explain.

Free study and optional profile recognition

The learning pages are publicly readable without an account. Their language examples can be practised with a browser and text editor, so the advertised route requires no paid software, subscription, trial or card. There is no verified fixed total study time; choose a pace that leaves room to experiment.

The completion page offers a Learn JavaScript badge after you confirm finishing the course. Google’s standard developer profile is available at no cost. This is profile recognition, not a promised academic qualification, professional certification or employment outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know a JavaScript framework first?

No. The course focuses on the language fundamentals. Framework-specific application development is a separate next step.

Can I study without signing in?

Yes. Read the public lessons and practise locally. A standard developer profile is used only if you choose to collect the offered badge.

Does the course include live teaching or marked projects?

The reviewed route consists of written lessons and examples. No live instructor access or individually marked project is promised.
