The first SQL unit assumes little prior SQL experience and recommends, rather than requires, familiarity with Cloud Storage and Cloud Shell.
Useful analysis starts with a clear question, not a complicated dashboard. Google’s Derive Insights from BigQuery Data introduces the SQL and reporting skills that help turn a dataset into an understandable answer. Its examples connect querying, loading data, checking errors, and presenting results rather than treating those tasks as unrelated tools.
This is a lab-based tutorial course with a final challenge activity, rather than a video lecture series. You can read all seven official written units linked below for free, including the complete walkthroughs and challenge brief. Starting the hosted lab environments and earning the formal badge are separate from that free reading route.

Your complete free reading route
Follow these official units in order. Each link opens the written teaching material or challenge brief directly; you do not need to start a hosted lab to read it.
- Introduction to SQL for BigQuery and Cloud SQL — Begin with querying basics, then follow the movement of sample data between tools.
- BigQuery: Qwik Start — Console — See how the console supports public-table queries, datasets, and sample-data loading.
- BigQuery: Qwik Start — Command Line — Explore the same basic analytical workflow through command-line instructions.
- Explore an Ecommerce Dataset with SQL in BigQuery — Examine dataset information, duplicate records, and business-oriented queries.
- Troubleshooting Common SQL Errors with BigQuery — Work through examples where syntax and analytical logic need attention.
- Explore and Create Reports with Data Studio — Connect data to a report and study its chart and filtering choices.
- Derive Insights from BigQuery Data: Challenge Lab — Read the final scenario and task brief, which asks you to apply earlier learning without a step-by-step solution.
Make the SQL examples useful
For each query example, write down the question it answers, what one row represents, and which filters affect the result. Then predict the kind of output you expect before reading further. This approach is useful even when you are studying the walkthrough without running its commands.
Pay particular attention to the difference between a query that runs and an answer that makes sense. The troubleshooting unit gives that distinction a concrete setting. Keep a short error log with two columns: what went wrong and why the change addresses it. That is more reusable than collecting finished queries without understanding their assumptions.
Reporting names and practical access
The reporting unit uses the name Data Studio. Google renamed the product Looker Studio in 2022 and returned to Data Studio in April 2026. Older walkthrough screens or example resources can still differ from today’s interface, so focus on the reporting concepts and check current instructions before execution.
The public written material is available without payment or sign-in. Hosted lab access uses Google Skills account conditions and can require credits or a subscription; an eligible allowance may also cover it. Reading the units does not complete the scored labs or guarantee a badge. Avoid assuming that running equivalent resources in your own cloud account is free.
