CS50 Introduction to Programming with Python

A focused introduction to writing, testing, and debugging Python programs, with exercises and a final project.

Harvard CS50P cover with a laptop displaying Python code against a dark green background.

Turn an idea into a working Python program with CS50’s Introduction to Programming with Python. Harvard’s free course moves from your first functions and variables to testing, file handling and object-oriented code. The focus stays on reading, writing and debugging Python rather than surveying several programming languages at once.

If you want to automate a small task, process information or understand how a script makes decisions, this is a practical starting point. The exercises give you repeated chances to write your own solution, find a mistake and improve it before bringing those skills together in a final project.

What you’ll learn

  • Write functions, work with variables and use conditions and loops to control a program.
  • Handle exceptions and debug behavior that differs from your expectations.
  • Use libraries and write unit tests for reusable functions.
  • Read and write files, then validate or extract text with regular expressions.
  • Represent related behavior using classes, objects, methods and properties.

The sequence connects syntax with everyday programming decisions: how to organise a task, how to handle unexpected input and how to check that a function behaves correctly. Those questions remain useful when your scripts become larger.

Skills you’ll gain

  • Python programming
  • Debugging
  • Unit testing
  • File handling
  • Regular expressions
  • Object-oriented programming

A Python-first route into programming

CS50P is designed for learners with or without coding experience. You can take it before, alongside or after CS50x. Choose it when learning Python itself is your immediate goal; CS50x takes a broader route through computer science and several languages.

The ten-part sequence starts with functions and variables, then develops conditions, loops, exceptions and libraries. Later lessons introduce tests, file input and output, regular expressions and object-oriented programming. Lectures and short explanatory videos support the problem sets, giving you more than one way to revisit an unfamiliar idea.

Make testing part of your final project

The course culminates in a Python project of your choice. The specification requires a main function and at least three additional functions, with tests for at least three of those additional functions using pytest. You also document the project and provide a demonstration.

That structure encourages you to separate the program’s behavior into pieces you can check. A small text-processing tool or a command-line organiser could provide a personal starting idea, although these examples are optional and are not assigned projects. Read the full specification before deciding on your scope.

Free access and a simple coding setup

Lectures, exercise instructions and the final-project specification are available through the official OpenCourseWare site. The course supports working in a browser or writing code on your own PC or Mac. Python is freely usable, and a local editor such as VS Code is free; a paid development tool is not required.

For the CS50 environment and submission process, follow the GitHub setup instructions. For assignment feedback and the free certificate route, register for a free edX account and choose the free or audit option. Keep the account identities you use for the course consistent so your submissions remain connected to your progress.

Start with the supplied environment and dependencies. You do not need to buy a subscription or add a payment card to the advertised free learning route. A computer and internet access are still practical requirements for using the materials and submitting coursework.

Practise beyond getting the right output

After solving an exercise, try explaining your function without reading its code. Then choose an input that might expose a mistake: an empty value, unexpected text or a boundary case. This optional habit can help you understand the solution rather than remember a particular answer.

Keep your tests close to the behavior they check. If you improve a function, rerun the relevant tests before adding something else. Follow the course’s academic honesty rules and use its approved help resources when you get stuck.

Earn the free CS50 certificate

The free certificate requires at least 70% on every required problem and the final project. Completing a portion of the assignments or watching all the videos is not enough. Use the course gradebook and check its current overall deadline. The certificate is for self-study achievement, without accredited Harvard academic credit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to finish CS50x first?

No. CS50P can be taken before, during or after CS50x, and it welcomes beginners.

Can I use my own computer?

Yes. The course supports coding on your PC or Mac as well as using its browser environment. Follow its setup and submission instructions.

Does the course include a free certificate?

Yes, after at least 70% on each required problem and the final project. Free edX registration and the course’s account setup are required for this route.
