Skills you’ll gain

  • Preparing map layouts and label layers
  • Understanding georeferencing and control points
  • Combining mapping with image-correction tools
  • Describing and sharing a map with useful context

No specialized training is required for basic atlas use, while prior GIS experience helps with the more involved sections. The course offers both QGIS and ArcGIS Pro examples, so learners should distinguish the free software route from the separate commercial application.

QGIS is free and open source. It provides a suitable route for practicing layouts and georeferencing with your own permitted data, while GIMP and darktable appear in the image-editing demonstrations. Publishing or redistributing any imagery still depends on that dataset’s rights.

The recordings also cover Soar+, private sharing and buying higher-resolution images through Pics from Space. Those services are separate from free viewing and are not included licenses or credits. The official Soar address currently redirects to Soar Atlas, and this review has not tested every account-level feature or purchase flow.

QGIS project: Obtain the free mapping software and current documentation. Soar Atlas: Use the current destination of the official Soar address.
