About this course
A writing project needs a recovery plan as well as a convenient place to edit. This free Scrivener course introduces backup locations, Dropbox transfers and interface settings that can make a long project easier to manage.
Karen Prince presents a focused excerpt from a larger Scrivener course. The scope is narrow: finding and restoring backups, working across computers, and changing colors, labels and corkboard appearance. It is not a complete writing or Scrivener workflow course.

Skills you’ll gain
- Locate and review Scrivener project backups
- Distinguish backup copies from synchronized working files
- Understand the need to finish syncing before switching computers
- Recognize a basic project-restoration workflow
- Adjust label colors and visual preferences
- Identify version-specific interface demonstrations
After an introductory platform-navigation lecture, the course turns to backups and Dropbox. The main backup lesson discusses finding existing copies, changing their location, retrieving a project after a computer problem and moving work between computers. Cloud synchronization can also propagate mistakes, so it should not be treated as a substitute for independent backups.
For current practice, follow the software maker’s synchronization guidance: close the project before changing computers, let all files finish uploading and downloading, and retain local backups. Work on a disposable test project before applying a demonstrated change to valuable writing.
The remaining lessons address editor backgrounds, binder and outliner label colors, index cards and corkboard preferences. Demonstrations include Windows version 1 and Mac versions 2 and 3; their menus do not all match current installations. The public syllabus lists 56 minutes across ten lectures, including the introductory platform lesson.
Scrivener must already be installed to follow the application-specific steps. Its license and any cloud-storage upgrade are separate from free course access. For no-cost practice of general backup habits, use sample text files and separate local copies; this does not replicate Scrivener project recovery or its interface controls.
