About this course
Seeing the same data question answered in two languages can make both easier to understand. Charles Redmond uses the Lahman baseball database to compare SQL queries in Microsoft Access with equivalent operations in R’s dplyr package.
The sequence begins with setup and simple selection, ordering and filtering, then progresses to grouping, aggregation and joins. Later examples combine tables and calculations, and the final section contains worked practice problems plus an introduction to reading other data into R.

Skills you’ll gain
- Selecting and filtering records
- Grouping and summarizing data
- Joining related tables
- Comparing SQL and dplyr operations
The course is designed for beginners and does not assume extensive baseball knowledge. R and the open-source RStudio Desktop edition provide a free route for the R exercises. Microsoft Access is recommended but explicitly optional in the course requirements; its license is separate from enrollment.
Follow the R examples if you do not have Access, and use the side-by-side SQL explanations to understand the corresponding query logic. Software interfaces and package behavior may have changed since recording, so consult current documentation when a setup step differs. This review did not execute every query or test compatibility with current package versions.
Frequently asked questions
Must I buy Microsoft Access?
No. The instructor lists Access as helpful but not absolutely necessary; the parallel R and dplyr route can be followed with free open-source tools.
Does the course cover joins?
Yes. It includes inner joins, joins on multiple fields, joining three tables, and examples combining grouping with joins.
