Information governance involves deciding how organizational data should be classified, retained, accessed and handled. Google Workspace Data Governance introduces the administrative tools and decisions connected with those responsibilities inside Workspace.

This free beginner course covers labels, data-loss prevention, Google Vault, storage-location topics and export settings. It is relevant to learners building an administration foundation in data handling. The course introduces configuration concepts; completing it does not establish that an organization satisfies every legal, regulatory or contractual obligation.

Connect a setting with the organization’s rule

Start with a fictional policy requirement and ask what information it applies to, who owns the decision and how it should be reviewed. This optional exercise helps you approach the course as more than a collection of settings. A technical configuration needs a defined organizational purpose.

As you study classification and data-loss prevention, distinguish a label from the action a rule is intended to take. Write down the expected behavior and the cases you would need to check. Do not assume that enabling a feature proves the underlying policy has been implemented correctly.

Separate retention, preservation and retrieval questions

The Vault material introduces several related responsibilities, so keep the questions distinct in your notes. What should be retained, what must be preserved and who is authorized to retrieve information? A clear distinction helps you identify which decision belongs to an administrator and which needs a policy owner.

Practice with fictional records rather than real sensitive data. For a proposed configuration, list the review evidence you would want before applying it. The course supports learning about administrative tools, while real preservation or legal matters require the organization’s appropriate procedures and responsible reviewers.

Review exports and locations in the wider context

Data regions and export settings affect how information is handled, but they are part of a wider governance picture. Identify the systems, people and policies involved before treating a product control as a complete solution. A short decision record can make assumptions and approvals easier to inspect.

Use the quizzes to revisit unfamiliar topics, then check current documentation and the Workspace edition available to your organization. An optional trial-account resource appears in the course, but activating a trial is not required merely to study the instruction. Live feature access and permissions remain separate.

Free learning and practical access

The complete instruction is advertised as free on Google Skills; a free learner account is required. Optional Workspace trial setup is separate. Practical use of Vault, data-loss prevention and other governance features depends on appropriate product editions and administrative permissions; no Workspace subscription is included. Google advertises a course completion badge after the required activities. It is not a professional certification or academic credit.
